What a Wonderful World!Good morning! I hope everyone had an enjoyable long weekend, and were able to get outside and enjoy the beautiful weather! We are starting our Diversity of Living Things Unit this week, so I hope that as you are spending more time outside and in nature, you will take the time to appreciate and notice all of the amazing sights, sounds and smells that surround us. Our world is bursting with of a vast array of living things, full of similarities and differences, and all unique in their own way. Curiosity and paying close attention to detail, are great ways to begin to understand some of the organisms that make up our world. I challenge you to spend sometime keeping a nature journal (or creating homemade field guides)-to ask questions, draw your observations, keep notes and record your research and findings. Examples:
Can you sketch a living thing, and use a field guide to identify what species it is? How do certain species behave and adapt to their environment? What do they look like and why? How do they develop? Why is each species important? Why are organisms so diverse? How do all living things interact in an ecosystem and work together in the web of life? Scientists estimate there are approximately 9 million species of organisms in our world and it is thought that many of them haven’t even been discovered yet! There is still so much to discover and learn! If you are interested in our natural world and are looking for a new book, here is one of my favorite reads. It is about a girl named Calpurnia Tate-who has big dreams of becoming a naturalist, even though she is born at a time that women are not able to work outside of the home. I hope you read it and it inspires you to continue with your nature journal! Until next time,
Mrs. Conway
